6 Book Festivals and Events to Attend in 2026

I met Kennedy Ryan and now I am OBSESSED with meeting authors. Meeting Kennedy Ryan and her amazing hug healed something in me. More than anything, it empowered me to continue drowning myself in fiction novels because what’s life without imagination.

As a black woman who loves books, I decided to research some book festivals that highlight Black authors and celebrate Black identity.

In 2026, several notable Black book festivals are poised to celebrate African American literature, culture, and authors. These events provide a platform for writers, readers, and literary enthusiasts to engage in discussions, workshops, and book signings. Here’s the list:

1. Black History Book Fair with Indie Authors

When: February 21

Where: Detroit

Detroit Book City will host its 10th Annual Expo with Indie Authors, residents, and businesses. Expect to meet 15 local authors that will speak about books, writing, and storytelling.

2. The African American Children’s Book Fair

When: February 1

Where: Philadelphia

The African American Children’s book fair will be held in Philadelphia that highlights, promotes, and sells book by and about African Americans for preschool and young adult.

3. Characters in The City

When: March 20-21

Where: Charlotte

This is more than a book event. Authors and readers will link up for two days packed with fun, surprises, book expo, over 35 urban fiction authors from all walks of life and unique writing styles.


4. African American Book Festival

When: April 11

Where: Richmond

With one goal in mind, this festival wants to educate, entertain, and impact the Richmond community through African American literature, by shining light on the stories told in their books. This event is a great opportunity for community members to meet and engage with their favorite black authors. There will be several featured authors.

5. Chocolate City Lit Festival.

When: April 25

Where: Washington DC

Think: literary family reunion. It’s where readers, writers, and community link up—whether you’ve known each other for years or met 10 minutes ago in line. Expect convos that linger. Get tickets now.

6. Black Romance Book Festival

When: May 29-May 31

Where: Atlanta

Black Romance Book Festival includes gifted Black romance writers, thought-provoking panels, and other entertainment and activities. Tickets are currently sold out but check the facebook group for re-sale options.
